Shoppers Lane Electric Vehicle Charging Depot Opens; PWP Changes EV Rebate Program

Published on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 | 6:28 am

On Monday, Pasadena Water and Power announced the opening of a new electric vehicle (EV) charging depot at Shoppers Lane, near the corner of San Pasqual St. and South Mentor Ave.

The depot, built through a public-private partnership, features 12 Tesla V3 Superchargers and eight PWP-branded Tritium 150-kW DC Fast-Chargers.

The new depot provides destination charging for consumers and additional options for residents and visitors seeking to extend their electric range. This follows the success of the Marengo Charging Plaza, one of the nation’s largest fast-charging locations, and the Arroyo Electric Vehicle Charging Depot.

PWP is expanding its transportation electrification infrastructure and currently offers over 100 publicly accessible EV charging stations throughout the city, officials said.

Construction is underway at Robinson Park and Victory Park to add more DC Fast Chargers and Level 2 chargers, with completion expected in early 2024. Four new Level 2 chargers are operational at Playhouse Village Park, and a 37-charger expansion project at the Del Mar Station Garage is also operational.

PWP Ends Rebates for New Plug-In RVs

Starting January 2024, PWP will end rebates for new plug-in EVs, a change consistent with regional utilities and state programs. However, the $250 rebate for qualifying used EVs will continue, with an additional $250 bonus rebate for those purchasing a used EV from a Pasadena auto dealer. An extra $1,000 is available for customers participating in PWP’s income-qualifying programs.

Eligible customers can also benefit from changes to the Federal Tax Credit starting January 2024, which allows buyers to transfer the tax credit to the car dealer at the point of sale, reducing the vehicle’s up-front purchase price. Residential electric customers can receive a $600 rebate for installing a qualifying “Wi-Fi enabled” or “Internet Connected” EV charger at home, or a $200 rebate for a standard (Non-Wi-Fi/ Non-Internet Connected) EV charger. Commercial customers are also eligible for charger incentives.

PWP is phasing out new EV rebates to expand opportunities for low-income residents and provide additional benefits for city-wide charging infrastructure. For more information about available incentives, EV charger types, and where to find charging stations, visit PWPweb.com/EV.
