Pasadena Water and Power (PWP), in collaboration with the American Public Power Association and other utilities across the U.S., is celebrating Public Power Week from October 1-7. Fun events are planned locally.
This nationally recognized event is an opportunity to highlight the importance of publicly owned utility services and their role in serving local communities.
It involves more than 2,000 community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.
As part of this year’s celebration, PWP is inviting the community to participate in family-friendly electric circuit learning activities. These hands-on, interactive events aim to educate kids about the basic science behind electrical circuits.
Sidney Jackson, General Manager of Water and Power, encourages the public to join in these educational events and learn more about the value of public power.
The schedule for these activities is as follows:
- Monday, October 2 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Hastings Branch Library (3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd.)
- Tuesday, October 3 from 4 – 5 p.m. at Jefferson Library Branch (1500 E. Villa St.)
For the average citizen, Public Power Week highlights the advantages of having a public power utility in their community. Public power’s most notable benefits include local control, reliable service, competitive low rates, and a customer-focused philosophy.
Public power utilities are owned by the communities they serve, meaning they are not motivated by profits and do not answer to shareholders, but rather to their customers. Decisions about how these utilities are run and operated are made locally, ensuring that the power remains in the hands of the people.
