Pasadena Water Main Upgrade Boosts Reliability for Critical Facilities

City replaces century-old infrastructure, overcoming technical challenges

Pasadena Water and Power announced the completion of a major upgrade to a 110-year-old water main on Bellefontaine Street, enhancing service reliability for several medical facilities. The project, which replaced 1,400 feet of aging infrastructure, faced hurdles due to the need for uninterrupted water service and access during the upgrade.

The new 12-inch ductile iron main replaces the original 10-inch cast iron pipe spanning from Pasadena Ave. to Fair Oaks Ave.

This upgrade improves water delivery to three medical office plazas, two nursing facilities, and one hospital in the area.

Pasadena Water and Power officials emphasized the project’s significance for the city’s infrastructure.

“Infrastructure projects like this are vital to our mission of continuing to deliver reliable, high-quality water to the community,” said Stacie Takeguchi, PWP Chief Assistant General Manager.

The project required collaboration between various city departments, including the Fire Department, Department of Public Works, and Department of Transportation, which was crucial in navigating the complex underground utility landscape, including existing gas, electrical, and telecommunication lines, while maintaining essential services during construction.

PWP said the water main replacement project aligns with the utility’s goal of ensuring long-term water service reliability for Pasadena residents and businesses. PWP completed the project on schedule, despite the challenges.

PWP, a community-owned utility, serves over 65,000 electricity customers and nearly 38,000 water accounts in Pasadena and nearby San Gabriel Valley communities. As a nonprofit public service, it operates under the City of Pasadena’s ownership.
