Pasadena Will Mark 35th Anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act With Proclamation

The City Council will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a formal proclamation during its July 21 meeting, honoring Disability Pride Month and reaffirming its commitment to accessibility, equality and inclusion.

President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA into federal law on July 26, 1990. The landmark civil rights legislation prohibited discrimination against individuals with disabilities and significantly improved access to public spaces, employment, transportation and communications nationwide.

“This month as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we recognize a transformative moment in our nation’s history,” said Casey Jagusch, chair of the city’s Accessibility and Disability Commission. “We’ve come a long way in breaking down barriers and expanding access, but the journey is far from over.”

Jagusch said the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on past achievements and recommit to future progress. “This Disability Pride Month we honor the progress made and recommit ourselves to the continued pursuit of a more accessible, inclusive, and just society,” Jagusch said.

City officials described the ADA as a “historical benchmark” that has expanded opportunity for millions of Americans by reducing barriers and changing perceptions around disability.
