Pasadena Workshop to Explain When Evictions Are Legal — and Who Qualifies for Relocation Payments

A tenant who receives an eviction notice, and the landlord who issues one, can find out on Tuesday, July 14, whether that eviction meets the legal grounds Pasadena requires — and whether the tenant is entitled to relocation assistance and how those payments are calculated.

The city’s Rent Stabilization Department is holding the workshop at 6 p.m. at the Los Robles Building, 199 S. Los Robles Ave., in the 1st Floor Conference Room. Attendees may come in person or join virtually by Zoom at Bit.ly/MonthlyRSDWorkshops.

Of the three topics on the agenda, relocation assistance carries the most direct financial stakes. The session will cover “when relocation benefits may apply, who may qualify, and how amounts are determined,” according to the department’s announcement — the questions a displaced tenant most often faces after a notice arrives.

The workshop will also address what qualifies as just cause for an eviction under Pasadena law, and the notices and procedures a landlord must follow to end a tenancy. Both matter to each side: a tenant can weigh whether a notice is lawful, and a landlord can confirm the required steps before acting.

These protections flow from Pasadena’s Rent Stabilization Charter, which includes just cause eviction protections for covered rental units and, the department says, is intended to ensure evictions rest on specific legal grounds and follow required procedures. The session is meant as a chance for residents to learn about local eviction protections, ask questions, and speak directly with department staff.

On parking: metered street spaces are available on Euclid Avenue and Los Robles Avenue. Additional non-validated parking is in the garage below the Rent Stabilization Department building, with an entrance on Cordova Street, and at the Paseo parking lot at 300 E. Colorado Blvd., main entrance on Green Street. Department staff cannot validate parking at either location.
