Pasadena’s Craftsman Week Returns Sunday With Eight Days of Architecture, Art and History

The celebration will spotlight Pasadena’s legacy as the West Coast center of the Arts and Crafts movement

Pasadena Heritage will host its annual Craftsman Week from Oct. 12 to 19, offering eight days of tours, lectures, concerts and hands-on activities celebrating the city’s legacy as the West Coast center of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The event opens Sunday with walking tours of Garfield Heights ($20 members / $25 non-members) and a free family day at the Gamble House, featuring self-guided tours, musical storytime, and art workshops. That evening, Pasadena Heritage leads the Twilight Tombs tour ($32 members / $40 non-members), exploring funerary architecture and the resting places of notable figures in Pasadena including Octavia E. Butler, Charles Richter and Richard Feynman.

On Monday, Oct. 13, attendees will tour Judson Studios, the oldest family-run stained glass company in America. The sold-out event includes lunch and behind-the-scenes access to both the South Pasadena annex and the Highland Park studio.

Tuesday’s programming centers on Greene & Greene’s architectural legacy, beginning with a Gardens & Gables + Neighborhood Walking Tour combo ($15 members / $30 non-members) and continuing with docent-led tours of the Gamble House ($20 general / $17 seniors, students, teens). The day concludes with “Metal Manifestations,” a lecture and exhibit by metalwork specialist Bryan Mead ($10 members / $15 non-members), available in person or via Zoom.

Wednesday features the “Crafting Illumination” tour at Old California Lighting in Orange, Calif. ($20 members / $25 non-members), followed by the “Behind the Velvet Ropes” tour at the Gamble House ($50 members / $60 non-members), offering rare access to restricted areas and detailed architectural insights.

Thursday’s events include a lunchtime conversation with ceramic artist Cha-Rie Tang and Pasadena Museum of History Executive Director Jeannette O’Malley at the Blinn House ($79 members / $99 non-members), featuring curated tile exhibits and a buffet lunch. The evening keynote lecture by Brett Waterman, host of Magnolia Network’s “Restored,” begins at 6 p.m. ($32 members / $40 non-members), followed by a wine and dessert reception at the Blinn House ($120 members / $150 non-members), limited to 50 guests.

Friday’s highlights include the “Fire & Light” tour at the Gamble House ($60 per person), led by glass artist John Hamm, and an evening concert by Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys ($35 members / $42 non-members), performing period music in the Blinn House living room.

Saturday’s schedule features the “Details & Joinery” tour led by master woodworker Jim Ipekjian ($100 per person), the Ford Place Walking Tour ($20 members / $25 non-members), and the Craftsman Fair at the Blinn House and Fuller Seminary campus, showcasing sustainable goods, vintage designs and local artisans. Additional tours include “Gardens & Gables” ($20 general / $17 seniors, students, teens) and one-hour docent-led tours of the Gamble House.

The week concludes Sunday with the “Marvels of South Marengo” tour ($28 members / $35 non-members), offering interior access to restored Craftsman homes now serving as offices for the Institute for Educational Advancement. The Bungalow Heaven Walking Tour ($28 members / $35 non-members) highlights Pasadena’s nationally recognized Landmark District, and the Gamble House Metalwork Tour ($30 members / $40 non-members) features rare displays curated by Bryan Mead and Jennifer Trotoux. The final event is the Greene & Greene Neighborhood Walking Tour ($22 general / $19 seniors, students / $15 teens), exploring Arroyo Terrace and Westmoreland Place.

Events are hosted in partnership with the Pasadena Museum of History, Save the Tiles, Old California Lighting, Art 2 Go, Remainders Creative Reuse, and the Institute for Educational Advancement. Ticketed programs offer discounts for members, seniors, students and teens, with many events featuring hands-on activities and family-friendly access.

Craftsman Week has become a signature celebration of Pasadena’s architectural heritage, drawing residents and visitors alike to experience the artistry and civic history embedded in the city’s built environment.
