Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena has been selected as one of the nation’s 50 top cardiovascular hospitals by IBM Watson Health, IBM Corporation’s data, analytics, and technology partner for the health industry.
In an announcement Tuesday, IBM Watson Health released the list of winners in its 2020 100 Top Hospitals program, which includes three annual studies on health system and hospital outcomes performance: the 15 Top Health Systems, 100 Top Hospitals, and the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, where Huntington Hospital is listed.
Extrapolating the results of this year’s studies, if all Medicare hospitalized patients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities, more than 100,000 additional lives and billions of dollars in inpatient costs could be saved, IBM Watson Health said in the statement.
The lists of the top hospitals and health systems were published by Fortune.
“Hospitals, health systems and the dedicated clinicians and staff who work at these organizations have emerged as true heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are grateful to be able to recognize these extraordinary leaders at this time,” Dr. Kyu Rhee, Vice President and Chief Health Officer at IBM Watson Health, said. “From small community hospitals to major teaching hospitals, the organizations on this list demonstrate a relentless commitment to high-value, patient-centered care and innovation. It is clear that the COVID-19 crisis will be a catalyst for reinvention, and we believe these top performing hospitals are positioned to emerge stronger and smarter out of this crisis.”
Huntington Hospital is listed among the category of “Teaching Hospitals with Cardiovascular Residency Programs.” Others in the list include those teaching hospitals without cardiovascular residency programs, and community hospitals.
IBM said this year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals provided better clinical care and were more efficient than their peers. The findings are based on the Medicare patient data included in the study and analysis of study winners versus non-winners. If the same standards were applied broadly to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater, the statement continued.
The goal of the Top Hospitals program is to identify top performing hospitals and health systems, and to deliver insights that may help healthcare organizations focus their improvement initiatives on achieving consistent, balanced and sustainable high performance.
The studies used to determine the lists are based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data, IBM said in the statement.
Performance indicators used in the listing measured clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health. These indicators include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare-associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency rooms, inpatient expenses, profitability, and ratings from patients.
Huntington Hospital has been playing an important role in Pasadena’s growth, health and vitality since its establishment in 1892. The hospital has grown from a small 16-bed community hospital to a nationally recognized healthcare center that’s now ranked among the top one percent of hospitals throughout the United States.
