The Pasadena Area Community College District Board of Trustees approved a resolution supporting Measure PL, which seeks funding for Pasadena’s Central Library, along with several educational initiatives, cultural resolutions and personnel changes during its regular meeting on Wednesday, October 9.
The Board endorsed three resolutions recognizing Latine Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and Filipino American History Month.
Board members heard from a delegation that recently attended the All-African Diaspora Educators Summit in Ghana. The group, comprising faculty, staff, and students, aims to incorporate their cultural insights into the college’s curriculum.
In personnel matters, the Board approved an agreement with confidential employees, providing a 1.07% salary increase and a $2,000 off-schedule payment. Several new hires were announced, including Beatriz Lopez as IT Project Manager and Irvin Monrroy as a ceramics lab technician. The Board also approved new roles for existing staff and acknowledged upcoming retirements, including Marilyn Johnson from Information Technology Services after 23 years and Jeong O from the nursing department after 29 years.
Two retired Campus Police employees, Alan Chan and William Abernathie, were approved to return to employment.
Board President Alton Wang and Trustee Tammy Silver received endorsement for service on committees of the Association of Community College Trustees.
Academic initiatives received support, with the Board approving curriculum updates and field experiences for students. Geology students will attend a conference in Anaheim and conduct fieldwork in Anza-Borrego State Park. A NASA grant of nearly $700,000 will fund curriculum development related to Venus studies. The Board also approved travel for Puente Program students to visit colleges in San Diego and Northern California.
A routine fiscal transaction involving the state’s Education Protection Account was approved.
