In a literary event that promises to challenge perceptions and spark conversation, the Pasadena Public Library’s One City, One Story program will welcome distinguished author Percival Everett for an afternoon of discussion on his novel James.
On March 15 at 2:00 p.m., Everett is scheduled to sit down with Pasadena Public Library Director Tim McDonald at Pasadena Presbyterian Church to explore the themes and artistic vision behind his latest work—an audacious reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the eyes of Jim, the enslaved man at the heart of Twain’s original tale.
Now in its 23rd year, One City, One Story is designed to broaden and deepen an appreciation of reading and literature and to promote tolerance and understanding of differing points of view by recommending a compelling book that engages the community in conversation.
The selection of James for the 2025 installment continues that tradition, inviting the community to reflect on the power of storytelling to reshape historical narratives. Described as both harrowing and savagely funny, James interrogates Twain’s legacy by granting its protagonist a fully realized voice—one that has too often been rendered in the margins of American literature.
Everett, a distinguished professor of English at the University of Southern California, is known for his fearless literary explorations of race, identity, and history. With more than 30 books to his name, including novels, short stories and poetry, his work consistently challenges conventional literary narratives. His previous works, such as Erasure and The Trees, have also tackled themes of racial identity and historical justice with a sharp, satirical edge.
The One City, One Story event will offer attendees a rare opportunity to hear Everett discuss his creative process, the historical weight of Twain’s novel, and the broader implications of retelling a classic from a fresh perspective.
McDonald will guide the conversation, after which Everett will sign copies of James for audience members.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church is at 585 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA. (626) 793-2191.
