The Pasadena Police Department reports that calls for service in October indicate a continuing decrease in crime in Pasadena over last year, highlighted by the 67% drop in homicides and 44% decrease in reported rapes but marred by a 32% jump in assaults with a deadly weapon.
Overall, the year-to-date calls for service made to police dropped 10% under the same period last year.
The crime rate declined month to month also.“In general, Person Crimes dropped in October from September. They are in normal ranges and just 8% above the monthly four-year average,” Police Chief Sanchez said in an email.
In a detailed analysis, Sanchez said that “robberies have been a problem this year and were 28% above the four-year monthly average in October. Domestic assaults were 34% above the average in October with 19 incidents reported. Property Crimes were right at our monthly average. Burglary Other was down 48%. Burglary Residential was also down again in October, 22% below the four-year average.”
The department remains concerned with burglary and thefts from vehicles, Sanchez said.
“Please do not leave your valuables in your vehicle. Stolen vehicles remain high this year and were very high in October,” Sanchez recommended. “Citizens are reminded to remove spare keys from vehicles to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.”
Recent crime rates in cities across the United States have varied.
The West Los Angeles area registered a 17 percent increase in violent crimes, which include homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, from 2015 to 2016.
New York City, on the other hand, registered a five percent reduction in murder cases year-to-date, and three percent reduction in the number of violent crime cases reported.
