[ UPDATED March 25, 2012 | 1:45 p.m.] Pasadena police shot and killed a suspect in an armed robbery Saturday night shortly after 11 p.m. near the intersection of Fair Oaks Ave. and Orange Grove Blvd.

The officers were responding to a call of an armed robbery that had just occurred at Summit Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd.

The victim followed two suspects while calling the police on his cell phone. The suspects ran in different directions trying to evade the victim.

Police say two officers immediately arrived and saw one suspect running near Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd.

The officers pursued the suspect north on Sunset Avenue from Orange Grove Blvd and as they neared him, police say the officers “observed his hands at his waistband. Fearing for their lives they fired multiple shots striking the suspect.”

The suspect was transported to local area hospital where he died. Police have not identified the suspect.

Pasadena Police Lt. Tracey Ibarra said that as of early Sunday afternoon, no weapon had been located at the scene of the Sunset Ave. shooting but that “but PPD personnel will continue efforts to locate [a] weapon.”

The second suspect, described only as a 17-year old black male, was taken into custody in the immediate area without further incident.

Ibarra has confirmed that juvenile suspect was arrested for homicide. Under California’s Provocative Act doctrine a surviving suspect can be arrested for the murder of another suspect.

A command post was set up at Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd. Pasadena Police Detectives and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Officer Involved Shooting Team responded to the scene and started their investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s bloodhound was called to assist with the evidence search.
