The Pasadena Police Department is working with the health department to alleviate tobacco-related issues in parks within the city.
Lt. Monica Cuellar made the statement during the meeting of the Recreation and Parks Commission on Tuesday, where she gave updates regarding the city police’s park-related activities.
“We are working with the health department. We are getting our training in December to help alleviate any tobacco issues in the parks.”
Cuellar said the police will also have their training on tobacco laws.
She added that the training is in line with the city’s tobacco control program, which aims to protect the community from the harmful effects of tobacco and tobacco smoke, especially among youth.
The tobacco control program aims to change norms and policies by reducing the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke and reducing young people’s access to tobacco.
The tobacco control efforts of the city police comes as the city council considers banning the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco products in Pasadena.
California state law prohibits smoking in indoor places while the Pasadena Municipal Code prohibits smoking in certain outdoor public spaces, including public parks (except Brookside Golf Course) unenclosed areas of bars and restaurants, outdoor areas of shopping malls and in or upon the grounds of any Pasadena Public Library.
