Political Gumbo: Have to Say It

Journalism is about truth, and sometimes that truth is not what people want to hear.

However, our job is not to operate on emotion, good or bad.

So here is the truth.

Pasadena police officers cannot arrest or legally interfere with the work of federal agents, including immigration authorities.

Of course it is up for debate where that work stops and illegalities began, but the facts do remain.

Some in our community see recent immigration actions as kidnappings, others see them as an enforcement of the law.

Either way, it is a fact that the presence of immigration agents in our community has created fear, chaos and paranoia.

Businesses have shut their doors, families are afraid to go outside.

The City has even canceled some park programs.

Right now, there is no sign that this will end anytime soon.

All people should be treated humanely and with respect.

As a descendant of slaves it is horrifying to see masked men, some of whom are not identifying themselves, snatching people off the streets.

Different scenario or not, it is triggering.

At last week’s City Council meeting, local residents called on local police, elected officials and City Manager Miguel Márquez to take action.

They, too, are limited. However, they can take action to help those impacted by these raids.

In your fear, don’t give in to emotional calls that provide less transparency.

Already some are telling local residents not to call Pasadena police during these incidents.

The Pasadena Police Department does not participate in immigration enforcement actions.

Also, police can confirm the identity or employment status of anyone performing as a law enforcement official.

That’s what Pasadena police did this past weekend. And no, that is not aiding immigration officials.

Of course, this column will not be popular with everyone, nor do I expect it to be.
