A U.S. Postal Service worker pleaded not guilty Friday to a misdemeanor animal-cruelty charge in connection with the alleged attack on a white peacock that used to roam a Pasadena neighborhood.

The postal worker, Charanjit Singh, was charged Oct. 1.

Prosecutors allege that the white peafowl, nicknamed Sugar, was attacked Aug. 18 on Mohawk Street.

Video of the incident upset many residents in the Pasadena neighborhood where the bird had long lived.

The Pasadena Humane Society treated Sugar’s injuries and relocated the bird to Northern California. Sugar suffered swelling but no broken bones.

Singh is scheduled to return to court Jan. 26 for a pretrial hearing.
