A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday at 8:30 a.m. for Guary Lonnie Shuford III, 33, who is charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend at a Pasadena apartment complex last year.

The hearing will take place March 17 in Department H of the Pasadena Courthouse, located at 300 E. Walnut St.

Shuford, 32, a parolee from Los Angeles, faces charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the death of Jamila Elysse Moss, 34. He pleaded not guilty to both charges in September 2023.

The shooting occurred on August 21, 2023, at an apartment complex in the 200 block of South Raymond Avenue, near Old Pasadena.

Moss was pronounced dead in an exterior portion of the complex.

Authorities believe the homicide stemmed from domestic violence, as Moss and Shuford were in a romantic relationship.

Following the shooting, Shuford barricaded himself in an apartment unit, triggering an extensive eight-hour search involving SWAT and canine units from both Pasadena and Glendale police departments. The incident began with reports of gunfire around 10 a.m.

Crisis negotiators from both departments employed established techniques during the standoff, including establishing communication with the suspect, setting a calm tone for negotiation, coordinating with tactical teams, and establishing clear surrender protocols.

Shuford eventually surrendered without incident around 7 p.m. the same day.

The incident caused significant disruption in the area, which is heavily populated and a transportation hub. Hundreds of nearby residents were evacuated and Metro train services temporarily halted.

At the time of the incident Shuford was on parole for a prior conviction of second-degree robbery from 2010.
