A pretrial hearing is scheduled Thursday at 8:30 a.m. for Mark Anthony Levels, a Pasadena man charged with murder in the August 2023 fatal shooting of a fellow tenant at an apartment complex on North Fair Oaks Avenue.

Levels, 54 at the time of his arrest, has been held on $3.1 million bail for more than 33 months. He is charged in the death of Tynisha Houston, 34, a Pasadena resident who according to police was shot in a common area of an apartment complex in the 2000 block of N. Fair Oaks Avenue, near the unincorporated Altadena border, at approximately 1:10 a.m. on August 8, 2023.

Thursday’s hearing will take place in Department F of the Pasadena Courthouse, 300 E. Walnut St. Judge David Garcia presides over the department. Department F can be reached at (626) 396-3323.

According to Pasadena police, the shooting was preceded by a verbal argument in a common area of the complex that escalated into a physical altercation. Police characterized the dispute as a “tenant dispute” between residents of two different apartment units. Levels allegedly shot Houston during the confrontation and was himself injured in the fight, police said.

Officers located Levels inside the same apartment complex shortly after the shooting and detained him without incident, police said. Detectives from the Pasadena Police Department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit executed a search warrant at the scene and recovered a firearm.

Pasadena Fire Department paramedics transported Houston to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Levels was transported to a hospital following his arrest for treatment of injuries sustained in the altercation.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony murder complaint against Levels on August 10, 2023, under case number GA115036. He faces a charge of murder under California Penal Code Section 187(a). The case was initially filed under then-District Attorney George Gascón. Nathan Hochman has served as Los Angeles County district attorney since taking office on December 3, 2024.

A preliminary hearing in the case took place on February 27, 2024. The case has since progressed through multiple pretrial hearings, with previous appearances on April 14, 2025; July 14, 2025; and January 5, 2026, according to prior reporting in Pasadena Now.

Information about the case can be reported to the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241.

Thursday’s appearance is the next scheduled hearing in a case that has now been pending in pretrial status for nearly three years.
