The Pasadena School Board on Thursday unanimously approved relocating Rose City High School, currently located at 351 South Hudson Avenue, to the Wilson Middle School campus at 300 Madre Street in East Pasadena.
Wilson was closed in 2020 in order for the District to save money amid revenue loss because of declining enrollment throughout PUSD.
According to Leslie Barnes, chief finance and operations officer at PUSD, currently Wilson Middle School campus houses the Special Education PALS (Pasadena Adult Living Skills Center) program for students ages 18-22.
It also currently houses the Center for Independent Study program for grades K-12 and a Preschool Program.
On Sundays, the Civic Center rents the school’s auditorium to a church.
During its meeting, the board unanimously approved the move along with the creation of new modular classrooms with new basketball courts and a track and field. It approved updates to the gym but this will not be prioritized under the plan.
The proposal to provide services to the students of Rose City through the artWorks and GroWorks programs in exchange for $1.00 per month rent to locate their offices on the Wilson campus was also approved.
The proposed relocation of a thrift store of clothes and items to the campus, as well as the proposal to include in the school a game room and a space for a garden were also approved.
In addition, the board approved the construction of modular rooms for PALS, as well as the renovations on the canteen for the continued use by PALS.
Meanwhile, the board did not approve the proposed relocation of Ed Center to the Wilson campus mainly because of the high cost of moving fiber cables to Wilson from Ed Center.
“This looks like an auspicious future for Wilson,” said board president Elizabeth Pomeroy after the board approved the staff’s proposals.
Pomeroy also said she is pleased that many groups will be able to establish a home at Wilson campus.
