Arvin Varma, chief operating officer of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, is scheduled to deliver the presentation as part of the commission’s regular meeting agenda. The Recreation and Parks Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters related to parks and recreation, and any recommendations it makes would require City Council approval to take effect.
The briefing comes as the city continues broader planning efforts related to the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The commission’s LA28 Olympic Ad Hoc Committee, led by Chair Terri Ashley-MacQuarrie, has been meeting to identify ways to engage the community before and during the Games and to collaborate with the City Manager’s office on goals, objectives, and a timeline.
The ad hoc committee recently adjusted its membership. Commissioner Boghos Patatian was appointed to the LA28 Olympic Ad Hoc Committee to fill the vacancy left by Commissioner Mitchell, while Commissioner Lon Bender was reassigned to the Recreation Programs Ad Hoc Committee.
Staff recommended that the LA28 Olympic Ad Hoc Committee continue meeting for the remaining two months of the current work plan cycle to complete its established objectives. The commission is expected to determine during its June work plan discussion whether future LA28 items should be incorporated into the Recreation Programs Committee rather than maintained as a separate ad hoc group.
The update from the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center is listed as an information item on the agenda. No formal action by the commission is expected on this item.
The Recreation and Parks Commission is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, in the City Yards, Public Works Building — Second Floor, 233 West Mountain Street, in Pasadena. For more information call (626) 744-7311 or visit https://www.cityofpasadena.
