San Marino High School’s Titanium Robotics team will make history this week as they host a robotics team from Taiwan for the first time in the program’s 22-year existence. The collaborative effort comes after the two teams worked together during the 2024 Los Angeles Regionals and aims to prepare both groups for the upcoming Aerospace Valley Regionals competition.

“Their dedication, hard work, and passion for robotics have truly set them apart, and their success is a testament to the strength, support, and spirit of our community”  said Superintendent Linda de la Torre about the San Marino team’s achievements.[a][b]

The Taiwanese team will be on the San Marino High School campus for activities starting Sunday, March 30, through Wednesday, April 2.  Events kick off with a welcome barbecue hosted by Titanium Robotics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first day. Both teams will then participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition Regionals from April 3 to April 5 in Lancaster.

Established in 2003, the San Marino High School Titanium Robotics team (Team 1160) competes in annual FIRST robotics competitions under the leadership of faculty advisor Scott Barton.

The program provides students with hands-on engineering experience, teaching them valuable skills in problem-solving, design thinking, and teamwork.

“I might not be taking on how to use a band saw to college but I think the general thought process and how to think how to design uh how to problem solve I think is the biggest thing that I’ve taken away from this” shared one team member about their experience.[c][d]

The team has achieved significant success in recent years, including qualifying for the 2024 FIRST World Championship Tournament in Houston, which brought together approximately 50,000 people from around the world. They also won the East Bay Regional in 2024, earning both the “Regional Winners” and “Wildcard” awards that helped qualify them for the World Championship.

Their 2024 robot, named “Motif,” was designed to handle specific competition challenges, including a ring toss game with foam rings. The team also received the “Team Sustainability Award sponsored by Dow” at the 2024 Los Angeles Regional. Their recent success led to recognition by local media, with features on KCAL 9 and CBS 2 news.

Throughout its history, Titanium Robotics has earned numerous awards, including the “Imagery Award in honor of Jack Kamen” at the 2023 Silicon Valley Regional, the “Creativity Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation” at the 2022 Orange County Regional, and “Regional Finalists” at the 2016 Ventura Regional. Team members have received individual recognition as well, with Kimia Hassibi (2019) and Olivia Cameron (2018) earning the “FIRST Dean’s List Finalist Award.” The team has also received various other recognitions, including Quality, Entrepreneurship, Industrial Safety, and Team Spirit awards.

The team receives sponsorship and support from major organization,s including Boeing, NASA-JPL, Gene Haas Foundation, Northrop Grumman, and others. This industry backing provides students with networking opportunities and potential career pathways, with many alumni going on to work for organizations like JPL and Northrop Grumman.

The school is located at 2701 Huntington Drive in San Marino, with visitor parking accessible through the Winston Avenue or Huntington Drive entrances.
