Monday, Oct. 5, is Child Health Day, a federally mandated observance when all agencies and organizations interested in child welfare are encouraged to unite and observe exercises to make people aware of the necessity of a year-round program to protect and develop the health of the children in the United States.

Unfortunately, some services associated with child health are closed due to the ongoing pandemic, but in Pasadena, some of the Department of Public Health’s child services are available on Child Health Day, many of them by phone only, according to an announcement on the department’s web page.

To access the Black Infant Health (BIH) program, dedicated to making sure women of color have healthy babies, call (626) 744-6155. For Child Health and Disability Prevention, a free health promotion and disease prevention program for low-income children and youth, call (626) 744-6093.

For Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control, which seeks to protect children from exposure by screening for lead, managing treatment, educating parents, and organizing and investigating possible lead exposure in the Pasadena community, call (626) 744-6171.

To access Health Insurance Enrollment, which seeks to reduce the number of uninsured children and families by providing access to care, call (626) 744-6068.

For those needing immunization services, the department’s Immunization Clinic is closed, but call to determine if vaccines are available. Call (626) 744-6121.

The Pasadena Local Oral Health Program, funded by the Proposition 56 Tobacco Tax Act of 2016, seeks to improve oral health by providing professionals and community members with education about oral health and dental disease prevention, as well as linkage to treatment of dental disease. For more information, call (626) 744-6093.

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, a federally–funded supplemental food, nutrition education and breastfeeding support program, helps Pasadena-area families with women and/or children who are at nutritional risk by providing nutrition education along with monthly food coupons. To protect all families and staff, your local Pasadena WIC offices will be offering services only by phone or online until further notice. Call (626) 744-6520 for more information.

These programs offered by Pasadena Public Health are closed until further notice: California Violence Intervention Program (CalVIP), HRSA 2.0 Operation Link, Pasadena Outreach and Response Team (PORT), Prop 47 Reintegration Program, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) Education, Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program, WIC Farmers Market Nutrition and WIC Little by Little.
