For 65 minutes, the Pasadena City College men’s soccer team went with its starting 11 as it tried to keep its slim postseason hopes alive Tuesday. But the Lancers’ attempt to hold on to an early 1-0 lead slipped away as visiting Los Angeles Harbor College scored two goals in a 9-minute span and edged PCC, 2-1, in a South Coast Conference game at Robinson Stadium.
PCC dropped to 5-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the SCC. With three games left, the Lancers will likely miss the SoCal playoffs. Harbor is fighting for a playoff seed and improved to 5-4-9 and 3-3-5 in conference.
Pasadena took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute following a corner kick by Ivan Ponce. Harbor goalie Jack Moore muffed his leap for the ball as Christian Palacios fought for the loose ball getting his foot on it. Kris Carvajal headed it in for a PCC goal.
Goalie Alan Lopez and PCC’s defender corps, led by George Barba, spent a good deal of time thrwarting Harbor scoring chances. Lopez made 13 saves and Barba made a goal-saving defensive block in the 66th minute with a kick out at the goal-line.
At the 61:05 mark, Harbor tied it at 1-1 when Miguel Lorenzo surprised the PCC defense with a quickly delivered corner kick that was headed in by James Tanaka. In the 70th minute, the Seahawks scored the game-winner with a 30-yard drive by Jordan Moss.
In the 60th minute, PCC nearly took a 2-0 lead but a breakaway attempt by Victor Menchaca was stoned by Harbor goalie Jack Moore.
Harbor outshot the Lancers, 22-10. PCC’s offense has struggled to reach the net as it has just six goals in the last six games. The team is 1-6 in its last seven games, and has not won two games in a row all season.
On Friday, Nov. 7, PCC travels to face Cerritos College in a 3 p.m. SCC match.
