In August, the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., honored more than a dozen local high school graduates at First A.M.E. Church, continuing a scholarship program that has awarded over half a million dollars since its founding in 1961.
This “Celebration of Excellence” highlighted these students who have all been admitted to a college or university to pursue a degree in alignment with their career goals.
Denise Jones, Academic Awards Committee Chair presented awards to the following deserving and accomplished Pasadena area high school graduates.
Pyramid Awards were given to Jordan Patterson and Kennedy Farr.
The following named Merit Awards were given: Carolyn Edwards Jones Commemorative to Alynah Henderson, Jane Strong-Moses & Jesse Moses, to Mackenzie Younker, Jean & Clarence Mills Family to Camille Glover, Nelle Kigh Thompson to Brooklyn Payne, Mabel Lockett Martin Commemorative to Chloe Bryant, Presidents Commemorative to Briar Bryant, Gwendolyn & Tommy McMullins Family to Bremiclyn Duncan, Willie Mae Hooks Lewis Commemorative to Noni Johnson, Houlemard Family to Alicia Randall, and Anita Johnson Cole Commemorative to Amirah Thomas.
In addition to the monetary awards from PAC, certificates of commendation were received by each award winner from the offices of Congresswoman Judy Chu, State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez , Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Assemblyman John Harabedian, Councilman Justin Jones, and Councilman Tyron Hampton.
Over the years of the academic awards program, PAC has awarded more than $5150,000 in academic awards to deserving students for the pursuit of post-secondary education.
Since its chartering on January 27, 1961, PAC has provided major public service programs and projects based upon the Sorority’s Five-Point Program Thrust: economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.
The Academic Awards Committee consists of Denise Jones, Chair, Michele Bagneris, Christina Bentley Scott, Melinda Campbell, Cynthia Cannady, Amelia Cobb, Gwendolyn McMullins, Alma Stokes, Lora Thomas, Rochelle Watson Howard. The PAC 2024-26 President is Allison Steppes.
