A 28-year-old Pasadena man was arrested early Monday on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend during a domestic violence incident, according to Pasadena Police Lieutenant Anthony Russo.
Russo said officers responded at 1:56 a.m. to the 300 block of Avocado Lane after a woman reported her roommate had assaulted her and taken her vehicle. Upon arrival, officers learned the suspect was the victim’s boyfriend.
The victim, identified by Russo as a 33-year-old Pasadena woman, reportedly sustained bruising and redness to her neck consistent with strangulation and had water in her lungs after being held underwater for a substantial amount of time.
She was treated at the scene by Pasadena Fire Department paramedics but was not transported to a hospital.
Russo said the suspect, identified as Jose Rivera Garcia, was located nearby driving the victim’s vehicle. Officers initiated a traffic stop and arrested him without incident.
The weapon used in the assault was the suspect’s hands, Russo said. Garcia was booked into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.
