Pasadena-based Tetra Tech, along with Texas A&M University, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a mobile electron beam (eBeam) system for destroying harmful “forever chemicals” in contaminated soils and sediments.

The project, announced on July 25, 2024, aims to address the persistent environmental issue of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. The U.S. Department of Defense Environmental Security Technology Certification Program chose Tetra Tech and its academic partner for this innovative approach to PFAS remediation.

The mobile eBeam system will be designed to treat PFAS-impacted soils and sediments on-site. eBeam technology generates high-energy electrons to break down chemical compounds. While it has been used successfully for various chemicals, this project marks the first field test for PFAS destruction.

Dan Batrack, Tetra Tech Chairman and CEO, stated, “Tetra Tech has used our Leading with Science® approach to support the U.S. Department of Defense to safely address potential chemicals of concern at its facilities and in the surrounding environment for decades. We are pleased to partner with Texas A&M University to advance the use of eBeam technology for PFAS destruction and to continue supporting the DoD in restoring the environment and protecting the safety of our service members and the health of our communities.”

Research has shown eBeam technology to be up to 99 percent effective in destroying PFAS in soils. Tetra Tech’s PFAS remediation experts will design and fabricate the prototype mobile treatment system and conduct extensive field testing at candidate U.S. Department of Defense sites.

The project’s goal is to demonstrate the scalability of the technology for widespread implementation and potential commercialization. The mobile system will serve as a model for future larger-scale mobile systems or fixed-base facility PFAS treatment systems.

Tetra Tech, a leader in water, environment, and sustainable infrastructure, employs 28,000 people worldwide. The company provides consulting and engineering services for projects globally, focusing on addressing the entire water cycle, environmental protection and restoration, sustainable infrastructure design, and clean energy transition.
