The Textile Exchange Conference 2024 has brought together industry leaders and experts from October 28 to 31 at the Pasadena Convention Center for the first time to address pressing environmental challenges in the fashion and textile industry. The conference, themed “The Case for Change,” aims to integrate climate and nature-focused practices into business operations while building resilience for the future. While offering both in-person and virtual attendance options, the event is not open to the general public.
The event emerges against a critical backdrop: the fashion industry currently generates 2-8% of global carbon emissions and ranks as the second-largest consumer of water globally. Global fiber production has nearly doubled from 58 million tonnes in 2000 to 116 million tonnes in 2022, with projections indicating a further increase to 147 million tonnes by 2030.
The three-day conference will feature discussions on sustainability integration, supply chain transparency, and system-level transformation. Key focus areas include addressing legislative and cultural challenges, examining traceability requirements, and ensuring compliance with upcoming industry regulations. Participants include brands, material innovators, farmers, academics, and nonprofit organizations.
Conference pricing offers multiple tiers of access. Standard full-access passes range from $1,650 for members to $2,200 for non-members for in-person attendance, while virtual passes start at $750 for members. Day passes are available at $600 for members and $775 for non-members. Special rates for NGOs and academic institutions include full-access passes starting at $375 virtual and day passes from $265. Member benefits include free tickets for Supporter Level (one ticket) and Partner Level (three tickets) members, while Friend Level members receive discounted rates.
Building on last year’s success, which saw 1,422 in-person and 525 online attendees representing 730 companies from 57 countries, the 2024 conference will also feature optional field trips on November 1 to visit local material producers and programs.
The agenda focuses on positioning sustainable practices as vital investments in business resilience while transforming environmental risks into opportunities through proactive solution-building. Additional emphasis lies on examining sustainable materials’ supply-demand dynamics and fostering equitable partnerships across the industry. The conference aims to strengthen resilience for companies, individuals, and collective efforts in adapting to climate challenges. With 85% of textiles currently ending up in landfills annually, the conference seeks to accelerate practical solutions for the industry’s environmental challenges.
