On Monday, the City Council appointed one new member to the city’s rental housing board.
However, other vacancies remain. Next month the City Council will appoint new Board members representing Districts 2 and 4, and the City Council will also have to appoint another at-large member.
At-large member Lourdes Gonzalez resigned effective April 2, citing concerns over compensation, board processes and internal dynamics, according to a resignation letter submitted to city officials.
The City Council voted 5-0 Monday night to appoint David Coher to an at-large seat, filling a key vacancy on the Board.
Mayor Victor Gordo and Councilmember Tyron Hampton recused themselves due to conflicts of interest, and Councilmember Steve Madison was absent at the time of the vote.
Coher emerged as the top candidate following a council consensus-ranking process in which members evaluated a pool of 11 qualified applicants before advancing finalists for consideration.
In that process, Councilmembers each identified up to five preferred candidates. Those rankings were then tabulated to determine which applicants would move forward for further discussion.
The remaining applicants will remain in the candidate pool for a year.
The 11-member Board is responsible for administering and enforcing the city’s rent control Charter amendment, including setting allowable rent increases, conducting hearings on rent adjustment petitions and establishing enforcement mechanisms.
Applicants must submit a completed application, gather at least 25 signatures from residents in their council district and file financial disclosure forms, according to city materials.
So far two applicants have applied for the District 2 seat, but no one has applied for the District 4.
