The Pasadena Tournament of Roses announced winners of its fifth annual Día de los Muertos art competition Friday at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, celebrating student artwork honoring the traditional Mexican holiday.
The competition, organized in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, Athens Services, Ed and Delia Corey, Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary and Wife of the Party, featured students competing in three age categories: 4-8, 9-13 and 14-18.
Participants submitted works across numerous art forms, including drawing, face painting and poetry.
Winners received cash prizes and gift cards for their artistic interpretations of Día de los Muertos, a 3,000-year-old tradition from Mexico and Central America that celebrates the connection between the spirit world and the living during its two-day observance. The marigold flower holds a prestigious place in this celebration, a significance particularly appreciated by the Tournament of Roses organization.
The winning artwork will remain on display at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, located at 501 N. Main St. Entertainment and refreshments at the event were provided by Chef Michelle & Company, Chiquita Bonita Restaurant and El Portal Restaurant.
