Los Angeles County is now offering updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines free of charge to residents, regardless of insurance or immigration status, health officials announced Tuesday.
The new COVID-19 vaccines, designed to target currently circulating strains, are strongly recommended for all residents aged 6 months and older. Officials emphasize the importance of vaccination as COVID-19 transmission has increased significantly during fall and winter months for the past three years.
Uninsured and underinsured adults can access free vaccines through the California COVID-19 Bridge Access Program at various health care providers and centers. The County’s public health department will also provide updated free COVID-19 and flu vaccines at its clinics, multi-service vaccination sites, and through mobile teams.
Children with Medi-CAL, those who are uninsured or underinsured, and American Indian or Alaska Native children can receive the new COVID-19 vaccine for free through the Vaccines for Children program.
Data shows that unvaccinated residents were 4.0 times more likely to be hospitalized than vaccinated residents during the 90-day period ending September 10, 2024. Older residents remain particularly vulnerable, with those 65 and older experiencing hospitalization rates six times higher than younger residents. The cumulative death rate among residents 65 and older is 18 times higher than among those under 65.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends one dose of the updated Moderna or Pfizer vaccine for most people over 5 years old. Children under 5 who have never been vaccinated against COVID-19 should receive two Moderna doses or three Pfizer doses of the newly updated vaccine.
Health officials also encourage residents to get the updated 2024-2025 flu vaccine, which can be administered during the same visit as the COVID-19 vaccine.
Pregnant individuals are at increased risk of severe disease, preterm birth, or stillbirth if infected with COVID-19. Vaccination can protect both the pregnant person and their newborn.
Studies indicate that COVID-19 vaccines may also reduce the risk of post-COVID conditions.
