Volleyball Pushes Mt. SAC, But Not Enough in SCC Opener

While the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team showed improvement in performance Friday night during its home and South Coast Conference opening match, the Lancers couldn’t muster enough to extend things in a 25-20, 25-20, 28-26 loss to Mt. San Antonio.

The Lancers remain winless this season at 0-8 while the Mounties improved to 5-4.

In the third set, PCC led 22-20 on a kill by Lahiz Longobardi, but Mt. SAC would send it to match point at 24-23. The Lancers wouldn’t quit as they saved themselves three times before the Mounties clinched it with a kill and then solo block by Marissa Hageman.

In the opening set, PCC fought off set point five times before losing that game.

“The fight is there and that’s one good sign,” PCC head coach Bill Sanchez said. “The passing was better and defensively there was a significant improvement. We need to learn how to finish, and when we do, we will win some sets. We’re young and it’s going to take time.”

The Lancers were paced by Brazilian freshman outside hitter Longobardi, who recorded a match-high 17 kills and added eight digs and three assisted blocks. First-year middle blocker Chy’annea Hodges added 10 kills and two blocks. On defense, transfer libero Sabrina Takeuchi tallied 22 digs, transfer setter Megan Williams 13 (and 32 assists), and frosh outside hitter Michelle Boyd 11 (plus five kills).

Mt. SAC’s Hageman was a thorn in PCC’s side with 11 kills and six blocks.

The Lancers next travel to Cerritos College on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in a 6 p.m. conference tilt.
