Cleveland Elementary School participated in the 17th Annual Walk To School Week, where an amazing group of 3rd graders took part in pedestrian safety activities. The 17th Annual Walk to School Week is an international movement designed to increase the awareness and celebrate the many ways of safely walking and biking to and from school.

Pasadena Unified School District Board Member, Mr. Tyron Hampton, participated in this annual event by assisting with the implementation of the pedestrian safety curriculum and engaged with the students in the Walk This Way board game. Board Member Hampton, who is native of Pasadena, attended Cleveland Elementary School and said that he truly enjoyed celebrating innovative learning around pedestrian safety.

The pedestrian safety teaching team included Dr. Lawrence Wynder, Ed.D and co-founder Ms. Suzanne Madison. The students were taught the importance of pedestrian safety while walking to and from school or anywhere. By the end of the session, students were able to explain the benefits and hazards of walking along safe paths, identify edges, demonstrate the procedure of stopping at every edge, looking and listening for traffic before crossing the street, intersections and crossing at traffic signals. “We learned that fifty percent of the class walks to and from school, said Madison. So, the timing of our pedestrian safety board game program is perfect.” All students in Ms. Joni Clark’s classroom played the board game and became Walk This Way Superstars. Each student was provided with their own Walk This Way game board kit to take home and play with their family and friends.

Walk-This-Way.org is an interactive teaching tool in the form of an educational game board where elementary school age children (ages 7 to 9) learn all about pedestrian safety. The game board comes with iconic signage, colorful graphics, street lights, hand signals, crossing guards, safety tip cards, caution cards and danger zone cards – all developed to teach and reinforce pedestrian safety in an engaging way.
