Building temperatures across Southern California will peak Friday with temperatures climbing 10 to 18 degrees above historical norms and even threatening daily records in some areas, while still remaining well below heat wave status, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.
Forecasters said Friday will be the hottest day of the week, at 91.
Temperatures could reach the mid-70s to mid-80s at the coast, upper 80s to upper 90s in valleys and foothills, and up to 104 degrees in deserts and northern inland valleys.
The warming trend began Tuesday as a weak trough exits the region. Temperatures will gradually rise through Wednesday, with most areas seeing highs within a few degrees of normal.
A cutoff low pressure system will stall over the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California starting Thursday. Despite the nearby low, a broad ridge of high pressure will set up over the western United States, causing temperatures to rise Thursday.
Saturday temperatures will trend downward but remain 8 to 15 degrees above normal, forecasters said.
Some weather models suggest an unseasonably cold pattern could develop next week with more precipitation chances, the weather service said.
