Saying it is still safe to donate blood during the COVID-19 pandemic and pointing to a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of recent blood drive cancellations, Huntington Hospital Monday said it moved and reopened its Blood Donor Center.

The American Association of Blood Banks said last week 355,000 fewer blood donations than normal are projected due to the coronavirus crisus.

Beginning yesterday, the Huntington’s community Blood Donor Center will operate at 800 S. Fairmount Avenue, Pasadena. Blood donation hours are Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday – 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. To schedule a donation, please call (626) 397-5422.

“As the only trauma center in the San Gabriel Valley, we rely on the community’s generosity to help us maintain a full supply of blood. Your support is extremely valuable and makes a huge difference in meeting the health needs of our community,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

Huntington Hospital’s employees follow thorough safety protocols to ensure blood recipient safety, as well as staff and donor safety, the spokesperson said.

The hospital’s statement said that people who traveled to China (including Hong Kong and Macau), South Korea, Japan, Italy, or Iran in the last 28 days are not be permitted to donate blood.

Please check the hospital’s website for more information, www.huntingtonhospital.org/donateblood.
