A Pasadena-based architectural and general construction company has presented a proposal to modernize facilities at schools within the San Marino Unified School District, a project that could cost up to $255 million.

GKK Works, headquartered in Irvine but with offices in Pasadena, has briefed the San Marino Unified School Board about the modernization needs of San Marino High School, Huntington Middle School, Carver Elementary and Valentine Elementary School.

Thursday, a report in the San Marino Tribune said Devan Mitchell, Senior Project Designer at GKK Works, was at a meeting of the San Marino School Board Tuesday and led the audience through a 20-minute presentation of the needs of the San Marino schools. GKK Works had earlier worked on a $70 million facilities modernization project for the San Marino school district.

For that project, San Marino voters approved bonds worth over $52 million. This time, San Marino is planning to put the issue before voters again, in a general obligation bond election that could happen on June 5.

San Marino Unified School District Superintendent Alex Cherniss told the Tribune that the district would seek $148 million at the election that would require 55 percent voter approval to pass.

Work on the project will include at least $20 million on plumbing, electrical and HVAC upgrades to the schools’ facilities, much of which were built as many as 65 years ago. Other work will involve replacing portables, installing emergency backup generators, playfield asphalt replacement, an enlarged lunch shelter and a new sports court in the case of Carver Elementary with additional classroom buildings in at least three of the four schools within the District.

At San Marino High School, a new fitness center, a new two-story west wing classroom building, a new visual and performing arts complex, and an aquatics facility will need to be constructed, and its tennis courts need to be expanded.

The San Marino School Board has directed the superintendent, Dr. Cherniss, to prepare a draft resolution and begin planning for a general obligation bond election on June 5. The board has also scheduled public readings of the resolution, this month and the next, once it has been drafted.
