Pasadena Community Leader, Activist Dr. Floraline I. Stevens Has Died at 83

On January 15, 2018, Pasadena community leader and activist Dr. Floraline Ingram Stevens passed away after an extended illness. She was 83.

Dr. Stevens served on the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF) board of Board of Directors and was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. National Executive Board where provided remarkable leadership to DREF for many years. During her tenure on the DREF Board of Directors from 2000 until 2004, she also served on the Sorority’s Board as co-chair of the National Program Planning and Development Committee.

More recently, Dr. Stevens volunteered with DREF as a member of the Sister Scholars Advisory Council, where she served from 2014 until her passing and was a member of the Council’s Research Subcommittee committed to researching African American women.

Wherever she served, she was a consistent contributor and key stakeholder in upholding the Foundation’s mission.

Dr. Stevens was a native of Los Angeles and worked as director of the research and evaluation branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District for 19 years. She was also a senior research fellow for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in Washington, D.C. and a program director for the National Science Foundation in the Education and Human Resources Directorate.

Dr. Stevens is survived by her daughter, Melba Stevens of New York City, her stepson, Ron Stevens, of Southern California, and niece Iris Ingram of Long Beach, CA.

Final arrangements for Dr. Stevens include a viewing on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 3:00-5:00 pm at Woods-Valentine Mortuary on 1455 N. Fair Oaks Avenue. The Delta Omega Omega Ceremony will follow at 5:30 p.m. at First AME Church on 1700 N. Raymond Avenue. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m. at First AME Church.
