Pasadena Heritage’s Executive Director Sue Mossman Will Discuss the State of Preservation in Pasadena

Susan N. Mossman, Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage, will address the Pasadena Rotary Club Wednesday in a talk entitled “The State of Preservation in Pasadena: Recent Challenges and Successes in Our Complex City.”

Mossman just hosted Pasadena Heritage’s successful biennial Colorado Street Bridge fundraising party, which attracted thousands to enjoy one of the City’s most iconic landmarks.

Her presentation as Rotary’s guest speaker on July 25 at 12 noon will come during the Club’s weekly luncheon meeting at the University Club of Pasadena, 175 N. Oakland Avenue. The event is open to the public. There is a charge for lunch.

Mossman has worked for Pasadena Heritage for 39 of the organization’s 41 years, starting as a volunteer. She has served as the organization’s Executive Director for the past 24 years.

Prior to that, she filled the roles of Program Director, Development Director, Volunteer Coordinator, Newsletter editor and more. Sue is well known in the community as a champion of historic resources, a member of various advisory bodies, a popular speaker and a passionate and effective preservation advocate.

Mossman was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and her father was a professor at the University of Michigan. Her family traveled widely, spending years in southern France, Bangkok, and Rome. She graduated from Kent State University with a major in English, and moved to Southern California in 1969. Since 1976, she has lived in a Craftsman home in Pasadena’s Madison Heights neighborhood, where she was successful neighborhood advocate before joining the Pasadena Heritage staff.

Pasadena Heritage is one of the oldest historic preservation groups in Southern California and the second largest in the state, with more than 2,000 members. The organization is nationally recognized as a leader in the field. It is perhaps best known for having saved Old Pasadena and the Colorado Street Bridge from demolition, working to preserve the Civic Center including the award-winning Pasadena City Hall seismic retrofit and restoration project and the former YWCA project, and championing the protection of residential neighborhoods and individual landmark homes and buildings.

The organization has nominated more than 2,000 buildings for historic designations. Its outstanding educational programs and tours are highly regarded and serve as models for other organizations.

Pasadena Heritage has the largest preservation easement program west of the Mississippi.
