The Pasadena Unified School District’s grab-and-go meal program will resume Tuesday using an outside vendor, a day after service was suspended due to a district kitchen employee possibly being diagnosed with COVID-19.

A deep cleaning and sanitizing of district kitchens and facilities was conducted after the PUSD received a report of a possible coronavirus case involving an employee who worked in one of the district’s central kitchens, according to Superintendent Brian McDonald.

The coronavirus diagnosis was not confirmed, but the employee’s co- workers were advised of possible exposure, McDonald said.

“I am so grateful for the strength and commitment demonstrated every day by the employees of PUSD,” McDonald said. “In times of crises such as the one we are living through now, it’s clear that heroes don’t always wear capes. Instead, they use computers and telephones to teach, answer phones and emails to keep our operations functioning, and prepare meals so that our students and their families continue to receive the essential services they rely on to get through this crisis.”

The district plans to resume regular meal service by PUSD staff on April 14, he said.

“Since Monday’s announcement, offers of help have poured in from civic partners, community organizations, restaurants, and individuals,” McDonald said. “I am deeply moved and grateful for these offers, and so very proud to be part of this great community.”

The meal program takes place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at seven schools in the district:

— Field Elementary, 3600 E Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena

— John Muir High School, 1905 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena

— Madison Elementary, 515 Ashtabula St., Pasadena

— McKinley K-8 School, 325 S Oak Knoll Ave., Pasadena

— Norma Coombs Elementary, 2600 Paloma St., Pasadena

— Wilson Middle School, 300 S. Madre St., Pasadena

— Eliot Arts Magnet Academy, 2184 N. Lake Ave., Altadena.
