A Joyful Time of Transition at Mayfield Senior School

Mayfield Senior School recently hosted a “State of the School” Breakfast on their Bellefontaine campus, directed to both past and current Board members. Although these types of events have been held in the past, this year was broader in scope—spanning Mayfield’s past, present and future. The gathering was kicked off by Board Chair Erika Randall, who emphasized the incredible changes the school has undergone under the leadership of Head of School Kate Morin.

Mrs. Morin, who is retiring this year, discussed some of the curricular changes during her tenure, including dramatically increasing Mayfield’s STEM offerings for students and overseeing the largest capital campaign in the school’s history, a historical renovation project which has already started to receive awards and accolades. Mrs. Morin remarked on her journey at Mayfield, saying, ”I love the mission, the mission of joy…to be able to come to a place at the end of your career, in sync with what you feel a school should be…it’s been such an honor and a privilege to serve this community.”

Board Chair-Elect Jane Hawley, who helped lead the search and transition committees for the new Head of School, went on to introduce Mayfield’s incoming Head, Laura Farrell. Mrs. Farrell gave a glimpse of the work she had already done as a Head of School at an all-girls Catholic high school on the East Coast, and she expressed her deep gratitude to Kate Morin for making this transition period as seamless as possible, thanking Mrs. Morin for “welcoming me with open arms.” The collegiality shared between Mrs. Morin and Mrs. Farrell was impossible to miss, and difficult not to admire.

Laura Farrell assumes the mantle of Head of School July 1, and Mayfield plans to host several upcoming events to celebrate Mrs. Morin. But the generous interactions between two leaders in a time of transition bodes well for the future of Mayfield Senior School.
