Alverno Heights Academy Jaguars Defeat Ramona Convent Tigers
Coming off a victory against Holy Family High School, the Alverno Heights Academy Jaguars faced the Ramona Convent Tigers at the Glendale Sports Complex. Team co-captain senior midfielder Larissa Hernandez ‘17 (21) scored the game-winning goal to improve the Jaguars’ Horizon League record to 2-0-1 (4-3-2 overall).
With dark clouds looming in the sky, the Jaguars offense showered the Tigers with 10 shots on goal and 6 corner kicks. In the 31st minute, co-captain senior forward Britni Delgado ‘17 (11) was able to carry the ball upfield to the penalty box. Hernandez ‘17 then scored the goal past a charging Tigers goalkeeper.
The Jaguars defense again stood steadfast. Co-captain senior Nicole Lianto ‘17 (6), junior Nikki Oberhammer ‘18 (17), sophomore Elisia Bendy ‘19 (2), and freshman Cassie Lianto ‘20 (10) allowed the Tigers only 2 shots on goal. One of those Tigers’ shots came in the 49th minute, but junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin ‘18 (1) was able to push it over the crossbar. This game was Melin’s third clean slate of the season.
The Jaguars have three games this week. They will face Sacred Heart High School on Monday, January 23, at the Boyle Heights Sports Center, Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School on Wednesday, January 25 at the Glendale Sports Complex, and Holy Family High School on Friday, January 27 also at the Glendale Sports Complex.
About Alverno Heights Academy
Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra Madre, California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of St. Francis who sought to create an environment in the San Gabriel Valley where young women could become informed and knowledgeable persons. Later renamed Alverno High School and sponsored by the Immaculate Heart Community, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical—has been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students. As Alverno Heights Academy once again, the school remains committed to its mission by encouraging each of their young women to be who they imagine.
