Mayfield Senior School: A New Chapter

Mayfield Senior School is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for young women grades 9-12, it has nurtured excellence in academics, athletics and the arts on its Bellefontaine Street campus in Pasadena for almost 75 years. And Mayfield is set for a tremendous year of growth under the leadership of their new Head of School, Laura Farrell. As the 15th Head of School for Mayfield, Farrell brings her passion to all-girls education, and was most recently the Head of School at Merion Mercy Academy in Philadelphia. Farrell brings leadership qualities and a depth of experience that will carry Mayfield into the next era, as it continues to educate the minds and hearts of students as they become joyful, faith-filled, confident young women.

Meet Mayfield:

• Breathtaking grounds. Mayfield’s central historic building, Strub Hall, recently underwent a massive restoration which brought in state-of-the-art mechanical, engineering, plumbing and seismic systems. These renovation efforts went on to win multiple awards from the City of Pasadena, the California Assembly, California Senate, Pasadena Heritage and the California Preservation Foundation called this work, “the gold standard for projects of its kind.”
• Robust STEM course offerings. Classes include Computer Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Statistics and Sports Medicine.
• Team spirit! In 2023, Mayfield won the Prep League titles in: Track & Field, Swim & Dive, Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Softball, Equestrian and Badminton.
• Energized tech and analytic lineup. Mayfield’s Math Modeling Team competes annually to solve real-world problems with applied mathematics, and the Robotics Team competed at the 2023 FIRST World’s Championship in Houston, TX.

• Opportunities for expression. Mayfield’s Conservatory for the Arts offers prestigious programming in creative writing, visual arts, theatre, dance, instrumental music, photography, film, technical theatre and vocal music. Student writers have received recognition from NPR (podcasts) and New York Times (essays). Student vocalists have consistently taken all top awards at WorldStrides festivals.
• Financial Literacy. Finance courses are embedded at every grade level, and students can also join Mayfield’s Investing Team (MINT) who won second place in their first “Stock Pitch” competition last year.
• Faith-filled community. Mayfield has a student body that is 70% Catholic and welcomes students of every faith. The school focuses on “incarnational theology”—recognizing the divine in all individuals. Community engagement and “service learning” are central to the spiritual life of the school.
• Student leadership. Students are encouraged to hone their leadership abilities on the Student Council, Athletic Leadership Council, Arts Council, Campus Ministry Council, and Student Diversity Council.
• Active Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (JDEI) program led by JDEI Director and JDEI Coordinator. Several on-campus JDEI/affinity groups serve students, parents, faculty and staff. Mayfield is a proud member of Private School Village and every year, many students and faculty attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference and People of Color Conference.

Members of Mayfield’s Class of 2023 will be attending a variety of universities including: Cornell, Loyola Marymount University, New York University, Tulane University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Stanford—and as far away as University of St. Andrews in Scotland!
