Muir HS Dodgers Field of Dreams Dedication Set
John Muir High School, the Muir InviteLos Angeles Dodgers, and the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) will celebrate the dedication of its renovated baseball field with a special public ceremony on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Invitation
The baseball field was renovated in honor of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, who attended John Muir High School where he first excelled in baseball, football, track, and basketball. Robinson went on to attend UCLA before joining the Dodgers in 1947 and becoming the first African American major league baseball player.
The Dodgers have embraced John Muir High School in honor of Robinson, and this year the Dodgers Foundation donated $50,000 to help fund construction of the baseball field.
Contributors include the Pasadena Educational Foundation, the Helen and Will Webster Foundation, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and the English Family.
The school is in the process of getting approval to name the new field “Stadium 42” in honor of Jackie Robinson’s number 42 baseball jersey.
In January, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, team historian Mark Langill, and radio broadcaster Jorge Jarrín met with 75 Muir High School softball and and baseball players in the school library for a panel discussion and a preview of Jackie Robinson, a new documentary film directed by Ken Burns.
A lively discussion followed, with young athletes asking questions that ranged from history and social justice to practical advice on modern-day career paths. The Dodgers presented the school with a framed jersey that once belonged to Jackie Robinson and that will be displayed at the school.
The same day, representatives of the Dodgers Foundation presented a check to help fund construction of the new field during a ceremony at Dodgers Stadium.
