Transitional Kindergarten at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School Is An Active Learning Community
The Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School is an active learning community. The 4-5-year-olds’ grace the TK classroom with their laughter, ideas, thoughts, connections, dancing, imaginations, and singing each day.
The TK curriculum consists of daily exposure to concepts in: Math, Language Arts, Religion, Social Studies, Science, and Social Emotional Development. Whether it be through a “Readers Theater” performance of Where the Wild Things Are, that promotes comprehension or singing a song about the Order of the Planets from the Sun, the students are always engaged in their learning.
It could also be seen when the classroom transforms into the “TK Supermarket.” The students practice social skills as a customer, and one to one correspondence of numbers in the role of a cashier.
The TK curriculum also includes Physical Education, Computer, Music, and Art.
As a TK teacher, I hope to establish a learning environment where my students are prepared for Kindergarten and most importantly long-term student success. When students feel safe, engaged, and supported the foundation for learning is set. I am grateful to witness and be a part of their most formative years and blessed to have the opportunity to set a positive faith-based learning foundation for them.
