Police Caution, Advise Public As Number of Vehicle Burglaries Increases

The Pasadena Police Department has cautioned residents and visitors to the city about the rising number of vehicle burglaries in Pasadena.

The department released an advisory specifying steps by which the public can help prevent falling victim to such a burglary themselves.

“Lock Up: Lock your vehicle and take your keys, even for quick errands. Close all windows, including vent or wing windows and sunroofs. Do not store a spare key to your spouse or partner’s car in your vehicle,” the advisory said.

The advisory also includes an explanation of how vehicle alarms still make a difference since they remain an effective deterrent to a burglary.

Burglars would also target vehicles where valuable items are left visible even inside the vehicle.

“If you leave items visible in your car, you are a target. Be aware that someone may be watching as you put a wallet, purse, or cellphone under your seat, especially at a gym,” the advisory said. “Take these items with you or secure them in your trunk beforehand. Even a visible charging cable could make you a potential target. Don’t think your dark tinted windows will hide your valuables. Thieves often use flashlights to see through tint.”

Even mail left inside the car should be hidden especially if your name and address are on the envelope or package.

Garage door remotes should not be left in your vehicle, and if you’re leaving your car outside the garage, make sure it’s parked in a well-lit area, according to the advisory.

Handicap placard theft is also something you can avoid by not leaving your placard in your vehicle when not in use. In some instances, Thieves have smashed car windows just to steal handicap placards.

Should you be the victim of a vehicle burglary, report the crime immediately to the local law enforcement agency. You can report thefts in Pasadena at (626) 744-4241 or online at www.cityofpasadena.net/police/crime/report-a-crime.
