Portantino Seeks to Limit Gun Purchases to One Per Month

With his bill raising the age for purchasing a gun in California to 21 signed into law, State Senator Anthony Portantino (D), who represents the Pasadena area, has reintroduced another measure limiting the number of firearms Californians can purchase to one per month.
The senator’s SB 1100 raising the purchasing age took effect January 1. The bill’s drafting was sparked by the infamous school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
“As the father of a high school aged daughter,” the senator said in a Jan. 3 statement, “I felt it was my parental and legislative duty to answer the pleas from Florida and endeavor to make our schools safer for all children.”
In the last legislative session, Portantino also authored SB. 1177, which limited the number of monthly gun purchases a Californian could make to one. Passed by both the senate and assembly, the measure was vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown (D).
With a new governor poised to take the reins of state government, Portantino reintroduced the bill today as SB 61. The legislation is co-authored by Sen. Steve Glazer (D), Sen. Scott Wiener (D), and Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D).
“No one needs to purchase more than one gun a month,” said Senator Scott Weiner, “limiting the number of guns an individual can purchase is a proven strategy to reduce gun violence.”
