Rose Bowl May Be Used in Effort to Control Spread of COVID-19

Iconic stadium could become testing site

The Rose Bowl may be used as a staging center to test for the Coronavirus.

“There is a lot involved with logistics, finances, resources, staffing, etc.,” said City Spokeswoman Lisa Derderian. “But potentially it could be a testing site.”

California is bracing for a surge in cases and the state desperately needs more hospitals and test sites. Across the country stadiums are being used to help fight the spread of the virus.

The Army Corps of Engineers is planning to turn Sleep Train Arena— the former home of the Sacramento Kings —the into a 360-bed coronavirus hospital.

On Wednesday, Everett Hockey Arena in Washington reopened as a quarantine center.

On Wednesday, CNN reported there were 887,067 cases of the virus worldwide. So far there have been more than 44,400

In the US, 202,446 people have been more than 4,000 deaths.

Yesterday officials said they expect between 100,000 to 250,000 fatalities.

“When you see 100,000 people — that’s a minimum number,” President Trump said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The projection was a flip flop for Trump who earlier predicted that the US would soon have zero infections when just 15 people were infected by the virus.

Locally, city officials have been working with officials at Huntington Hospital on a surge plan.

Earlier this month, Pasadena Now reported that local officials had toured St. Luke’s Hospital and determined the site could not be used because all of the plumbing has been pulled out.

So far the Pasadena Public Health Department has confirmed 33 cases of in Pasadena. However, there are at least 151 cases of the virus when numbers of nearby cities are added to Pasadena’s.

On Tuesday the LA County Health Department reported Glendale has 76 confirmed cases. Alhambra has 13 cases of infection. Arcadia has 10 confirmed cases of infection.

La Canada-Flintridge has eight cases, while South Pasadena and San Gabriel each has six. Monrovia has five cases.

The county did not report numbers for nearby Altadena.

Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 10 new deaths and 548 new cases of the Coronavirus as the county reached 3011 cases of infection.

“This is the highest daily number of deaths we’ve reported to date, and our hearts go out to every family who has experienced loss related to this pandemic,” said Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County public health director. “Though we expect to continue to see a rise in positive COVID-19 cases and sadly, deaths in the weeks to come, it is crucial that we continue to stay home as much as possible, practice social distancing if we must go out for essential services, self-isolate when we are sick, and self-quarantine if exposed to someone who is sick. We are all in this together.”
