While the majority of Toyota’s vehicles are consumer-focused, daily commuter sedans and SUVs, the models designated with the initials GR signify the company’s peak performance offerings, with the 2024 GR Supra leading the charge.
Although the Supra shares its foundation with the BMW Z4 convertible, it has its own distinctive look. The Supra is equipped with similar powertrains: a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a 382-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. All GR Supra models feature rear-wheel drive and offer a choice between an eight-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission (my model was equipped with the 6-speed manual). The interior offers comfort and space for two adults on long journeys, however twisty roads are where it shines.
There’s very little new for the 2024 model year except for a 45th Anniversary Edition which is the subject of this review. This trim is limited to just 900 units, available exclusively in orange or white. It comes with several enhanced features, such as an elevated and adjustable rear spoiler, matte black wheels, and distinctive body side graphics.
With 382 horses under the hood coupled with 368 lb-ft of torque, the Supra can really fly. My 45th Anniversary Edition was equipped with the optional 6-speed manual transmission, which gave me control over how many rpms the engine rev’d to before kicking it into the next gear. The manual was pretty straight forward so even manual newbies will find it easy to shift. Expect to get 19/city, 27/highway and 21/combined MPG.
While having a spacious interior is not number one on the Supra’s hit parade, it is accessible and relatively comfortable. I’m pretty short and I was fine, but I imagine that taller drivers might feel a little cramped. However, in the scheme of things I think the overall experience in the cockpit was that of a cushy seat, great back support and a snug as a bug feeling.
The GR Supra features an 8.8-inch central display with a lightly customized version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment interface. A digital gauge cluster with a unique design is standard across all trim levels[4]. The system offers optional navigation and Apple CarPlay integration, and Android Auto is now available.
The infotainment system in the GR Supra offers a range of features, including touchscreen functionality and voice recognition. Some users have reported occasional lag issues, which can sometimes be resolved by resetting the system. It’s worth noting that the availability of certain features like Apple CarPlay and navigation may vary depending on the specific trim level and model year.
I found the GR Supra to be a quick and agile happy-dance car. It excels on winding mountain roads, offering precise and predictable steering, remarkable grip, and a balanced feel that makes it seem almost effortless to maneuver. I also found it to be an attention-getter, I can’t tell you how many times I was stopped and asked about the awesome-sauce car I was driving!
