Two sessions—9 to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon—will walk participants through the fundamentals of rose pruning in the Rose Garden itself. For $140, attendees receive instruction from Reid, live demonstrations, a professional-grade FELCO 2 pruner to take home, and direct access to a curator’s expertise.
Reid’s teaching philosophy is grounded in demystifying the plant. “I get to see people transform when they walk in,” Reid said. “I understand the medicine of roses now. It makes you feel warm and loved and connected.” He acknowledged that many gardeners arrive anxious about plant care, asking questions like “Is my rose gonna die?”
Before joining The Huntington in 2023, Reid worked in digital advertising and completed volunteer work at botanical gardens. He completed the UC Master Gardener program through Los Angeles County, earned certification through Grow L.A. Gardens, and obtained a California native plant landscaper certificate from the Theodore Payne Foundation.
The workshop curriculum covers how and when to prune for shape and bloom production, proper tool use and maintenance, managing old growth, and winter cleanup and soil care. The Huntington is normally closed to the public on Tuesdays, but workshop participants gain special access. Refunds are available only for cancellations made at least five days before the event.
Botanical Workshop: Rose Pruning will run on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 9–10 a.m. and 11 a.m.–12 p.m. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, California. For more information, call (626) 405-2100 or visit https://www.huntington.org/event/botanical-workshop-rose-pruning. Ticket prices: $140.
