In a gilded ballroom where Southern California’s elite have gathered for generations, a different sort of society will soon assemble. The Langham Huntington, Pasadena, in partnership with Focus Features, is turning back time to the Regency era for a commemorative ball celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Pride & Prejudice,” the acclaimed 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s masterwork.
“Join The Langham Huntington, Pasadena and Focus Features for a magical experience celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Pride & Prejudice, one of the greatest love stories of all time,” organizers enthuse.
On Thursday, May 22, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., guests will trade their modern kit for empire waistlines and tailcoats as the historic hotel at 1401 South Oak Knoll Avenue becomes a simulacrum of early 19th-century England. The three-hour affair promises live music and entertainers beneath sparkling chandeliers, with immersive elements “providing endless opportunities to capture timeless moments.”
“When Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. It is a classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit, and emotional force.”
The celebration honors a film that successfully translated Austen’s timeless tale of love and misunderstanding to modern audiences while preserving its period charm. Released in 2005 and celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, the Joe Wright-directed adaptation earned four Academy Award nominations and grossed over $122 million worldwide.
The movie’s screenplay by Deborah Moggach brought new life to the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, portrayed by Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, respectively, alongside a distinguished cast including Judi Dench, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, and Rosamund Pike.
The film adapts Jane Austen’s timeless masterwork with a modern sensibility.
Prospective attendees have until May 20 to secure tickets, with two tiers available. General admission, priced at $150, includes entry and a welcome glass of champagne or non-alcoholic sparkling beverage. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, $300 VIP tickets offer early entry at 7:30 p.m. and a commemorative gift tote filled with exclusive merchandise. Guests are encouraged to arrive in period-appropriate attire, though those lacking a Regency wardrobe need not despair—exclusive accessories will be available for purchase at the event. Throughout the evening, attendees can enjoy cocktails and light fare while immersing themselves in what organizers describe as “one of the greatest love stories of all time.”
