Shi Heng Yi, a 35th-generation Shaolin master and renowned teacher and founder of Shaolin Temple Europe, makes a rare Western public appearance in Pasadena on Saturday, March 7, for a ticketed author event hosted by Vroman’s Bookstore.

Born in Germany to Vietnamese refugee parents, Shi Heng Yi began training in Shaolin Kung Fu at the age of four and has built Shaolin Temple Europe into a center devoted to the training of mind and body in the Shaolin tradition.

His new book, “Shaolin Spirit: The Way to Self-Mastery,” published by Particular Books (a Penguin imprint), presents 12 personal core practices drawn from centuries of Shaolin tradition — rooted in Zen and Taoist philosophy — and applies them to contemporary concerns including sleep, mental clarity, strength, flexibility and focus.

“Shaolin is more than just a martial art — it is a way of life,” the book states.

The event is held at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

Tickets include one signed copy of “Shaolin Spirit,” distributed at check-in.

There will be no separate public book signing.

“Shi Heng Yi discusses Shaolin Spirit: The Way to Self-Mastery” will be held Saturday, March 7, at noon. Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena.
