A Singing Crocodile Takes the Stage, Backed by EGOT Winners

Award-winning 'Greatest Showman' composers bring Bernard Waber's beloved children's book series to California theater
Published on Feb 9, 2025

The tale of a friendly crocodile that captured generations of young readers is getting a musical transformation from EGOT-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul at Pasadena Playhouse’s upcoming production at The Colony Theatre.

“The musical is packed with humor, heart, and showstopping tunes that will have audiences of all ages roaring with song,” states the Pasadena Playhouse, California’s official State Theatre, which both organizes and sponsors the adaptation.

The production marks the latest adaptation of Bernard Waber’s 1965 picture book series, bringing its enduring themes of friendship and acceptance to a new generation through the musical language of the acclaimed composers behind “Dear Evan Hansen” and “La La Land.”

Pasek and Paul, whose emotionally driven compositions have resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, join the historic Pasadena Playhouse, which since its 1917 establishment has premiered notable productions including “Sister Act” and “Baby It’s You!”

The theater’s research indicates that such live performances contribute significantly to children’s development, fostering cognitive skills, confidence, and empathy while enhancing social abilities and cultural awareness.

Designed specifically for children ages 5-12 and their families, this world premiere musical continues the Playhouse’s tradition of innovative programming since its 1937 designation as the State Theatre of California.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile: The Musical opens February 15, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. The Colony Theatre, 555 N Third St, Burbank, CA 91502. Tickets: $34.00-$50.00. Information: Pasadena Playhouse (626) 356-7529, www.pasadenaplayhouse.org; Colony Theatre (818) 558-7000, www.colonytheatre.org.
