Altadena Examines Its Architectural Soul as Rebuilding Accelerates

Community explores heritage amid County's new fast-track rebuilding plans

The title says it all: “Altadena Architecture: A Legacy and an Elegy.”

As Los Angeles County fast-tracks rebuilding with new pre-approved home designs, residents in Altadena will gather to explore what their community’s built environment has meant—and what it might become.

The “Altadena Revealed Lecture Series” presents this examination of local architectural heritage on Friday, August 22 at 7 p.m. at the Altadena Main Library.

The timing proves significant: just three weeks after Los Angeles County Planning introduced pre-approved standard home-design plans on August 1 to accelerate rebuilding while maintaining local architectural character.

Tim Gregory, known as “The Building Biographer,” will lead the discussion.

Gregory holds a B.A. in English from UCLA and master’s degrees in library science from UC Berkeley and public history & historic preservation from CSU Dominguez Hills.

The County’s initiative addresses a central tension in disaster recovery: how to rebuild quickly while preserving the architectural character that defines a community’s identity.

“Altadena Revealed Lecture Series” will run on Friday, August 22 at 7 p.m. at Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena.
